Well done overall, a bit in the typical vein of the feds-and-thiefs-working-together (with-sexual-interest-on-the-side) story, but unique enough and well written with quirky characters. It's a fun, quick, exciting read...somewhat cliched, yes, but I like this genre so it wasn't boring or TOO predictable. The cast of characters bordered on silly in behavior, but that gave the book another angle to work on, which it continues right along in book two. This book was short, but I am looking forward to more of these characters and the development of their story in the other three books. The next book alone is 445 pages, so it'll definitely give us that.Simon and Jeremy were amusing in all their smirks and attraction (which I would have liked them to hold out and tease each other on for longer, but their coming together works in the moment). The way the characters interact and the descriptions of their actions put you in the scene pretty well, and I think it will only get better the further the story goes. I am very excited to read about the next encounters (Jeremy working with the team again), especially with how this book ends. There's not much else to say about this book. You can expect the suave thief, the typically gruff FBI team leader, the goof-offs of a FBI squad that are actually very capable when necessary, and noir style heists. This first book just gives a peek into what we can expect, and I think it is well worth reading and continuing on. So if you're in the mood for this type of story, read and enjoy.

Before I begin, I confess I'm reviewing the entire series because I'm too lazy to break it down.I was shocked that such a brilliant series could be sold for such a cheap price, and how few reviews there were for it. BUT then I found out by the middle of High Fidelity that this series was actually published for FREE online with added sex scenes (SCORE), which explained both the price and the minimal reviews.I'm a BIG fan of detective novels, spy novels, fantasy novels, and bonus if they're centralized around two gay characters. So imagine by surprise to come across this series, quietly and sneakily hiding among some god-awful gay romance novels. A GAY SPY NOVEL is already difficult to find, but to be so well-written with such a distinctive voice and likable characters, it's practically UNHEARD of. I'm only sorry that this series is over. I LOVE LOVE that it's SUCH a typical spy novel, with a macho FBI agent (Simon) and a fancy snarky art thief (Jeremy) who is, by the way, ENGLISH. OH YUM. This is literally James Bond mixed with White Collar and any other male-centric spy/action movies, except the hot love interest is Jeremy who is totally a BAMF. If any of you ever watched James Bond movies and or other spy movies and thought, man, what would it be like if the only change is that the love interest is a man, then these books are for you. It's just FUN to read them.I like that Simon is such a typical good man - responsible, clueless, big and gay (though this was never really expanded, he seemed to be more of an opportunist really, except for the fact that he only slept with Jeremy for the duration of the series and beyond), easily spooked by feelings, and he can be a jerk sometimes (at very crucial moments even) without realizing it.I like that Jeremy is a great contrast to Simon - lithe, eel-like (the verb form is used multiple times throughout the books to describe Jeremy's actions), effortless, intuitive, detail-oriented, snarky, patient (I mean seriously when it comes to Simon he is infinitely patient), and he tends to humor Simon in situation where he knows Simon is going to be spooked by realizing he's revealing his feelings without meaning to.And the rest of the cast. Just. Oh yes.I'm so, so, so very fond of Simon and Jeremy. I have to admit I didn't really understand their relationship within the context of the books until High Fidelity (and at that point I think I had help from the cut out scenes from the author's website), but I think the author's intention was for the book to be primarily a spy series with some very, very subtle romance nuances so when looking at it that way, I can't mind it one bit.The author mentioned the sex scenes would have jarred the pace of the books, and I think maybe she had a point there, because the sex scenes really revealed a lot more mental and emotional things going on, which were barely hinted during the books. Given that most of the series was in Simon's POV, and Simon is a clueless, macho dude that cringes away from FEELS, it makes sense, but it also makes the progress of their relationship confusing to understand. By High Fidelity I still questioned if Simon really loved Jeremy, and I didn't get that idea until his conversation with Ethan, and that I think was the turning point in their relationship - finally Simon ADMITTED out loud Jeremy meant more to him than just to fulfill a responsibility to a fuck-up. Maybe I would change my mind when I re-read this series (oh BELIEVE me, this is a definite re-read), but as of now I stand firm that if the sex scenes were added on in the first or second or third books, it would have made me feel more invested in their relationship, as opposed to being invested in the possibility of more than good sex and confused feels all around. I thought maybe the first book should have included their first time, which said a lot about the start of their weird feel-non-feel romance. But sex scene or not, these books were a gem (that's high praise as a lot of gay romance are not so well-written that they can just take out the sex scenes as fillers). The pace was on point throughout all the books, the plot well thought out and unhurried, the characters three dimensional, and I was pleasantly surprised by certain plot points. If there were any predictable scenes they all played out like how a spy/action movie would, and I sure can't complain there.I cannot emphasize enough how STARVED I was for a good gay spy novel, and I got FOUR books from this series? JACKPOT.If you don't have 4 dollars to spare on all 4 of these books, then go read them for free on her website. Though I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend supporting this author, because compared to a lot of other gay romance that cost more, this woman deserves every cent she can make from these books. I would gladly pay 10 dollars for each of this book. QUALITY.Thank you M Chandler for making the last month so enjoyable. I barely got any work done as I spent all my free time reading them, but so worth it.

Simon Drake is a young talented FBI agent code named Templar. He leads his rather eccentric spec ops team on an undercover job to surround and capture a jewel thief, aka the Shadow, before he can steal the The Morning Star Diamond. This crazy band of misfits races against time to save the world from an evil madman named Krupp who hired the Shadow to steal the Morning Star Diamond which he needs to launch a satellite that can do really bad things, not sure what, but just bad stuff, lol! The problem is Jeremy Archer aka the Shadow outsmarts them by not only evading Simon's team of "professionals", lol, but leaves the scene with the Morning Star Diamond firmly in his possession. OUCH! The chase is on to find the Shadow and the Diamond in time to save the world and thus save mankind! What I loved about this book was it was smart, sophisticated, sexy and full of off the wall humor. The banter between Simon and his team had me chuckling with delight. The sexual tension between Simon and Jeremy the Shadow was a slow simmer which by the end of the book was turned up a notch and had me rating it 5 stars.
