The initial premise of an aging male being accepted into a MMORPG Beta program to be fully digitalized was good - there are many ways to build this into a good story.Unfortunately, the situations presented, characters portrayed, and absence of an overall plot made this a barely readable story that I barely managed to get through.The MC seemed to stereotype an old man in a young body - weak, bumbling, grumpy, forgetful, and constantly complaining about the fake game environment. His supporting cast did not make for a happy group.Worse was this story appeared pointless - why were we following this particular MC, as he was going through his new life one thing after another, with no apparent purpose or end goal. If there was a series ARC somewhere, it was hidden too deeply to be found.Game mechanics - not very informative, with peculiarities such as magical spell damage based on charisma.
I greatly appreciated and end the humor in this book, the story was great the character or interesting, and the plot good. I definitely buy the next one.
What a disappointment. I was looking forward to this story but at the end felt completely let down, by things to numerous to mention. It just wasn't a great story, boring, forgettable and not really wort recommending.
I thought it was a fun, quick read. It had a good flow and was humorous. I would read another in the series.
I definitely recommend this book! From the beginning of the book, I loved this "Black Mirroresque" premise of transferring real peoples' consciousness into a virtual game world. Zahn cleverly weaves broad philosophy (What is Death?) into modern fantasy role playing adventures. The characters interact with different mythical races and societies and sprint between brutal battles and grudging pushings-onwards that make me want to both take refuge in any one of my favorite fantasy RPG games from the 2000's for about 10 hours AND simultaneously reminds me I would never want to be trapped in one forever. I specifically enjoyed his use of humor with race relations (between elves and other mythical races here, of course), delivering one hell of a mic drop on racism.It does contain moderately sexual and very violent situations, but the adult material doesn't overpower the overall story--actually about the perfect amount to keep the fantasy RPG environment authentic.I was given an advanced reader copy to give an honest review.
The beginning is a little bit of an unneeded info dump, but once the MC is in the game world the story is good. The RPG stuff is well described, detailed, and has an impact on the story. It’s a bit slice of life but that’s good with me.The thing that sets this story apart is going to be the humor. There’s a good gamer vibe and the character Eldertits is definetly the main source of the jokes. There’s actually a pretty funny side to the story that I wasn’t expecting. It’s a specific kind of irreverent adult humor that might not work for everyone.Score: 7.4 out of 10
So I really enjoyed this book. I received an advance review copy from the author and chose to leave a review of my own accord.Beta Life not only kept me turning pages, but it kept me laughing constantly. That said, the humour in this book is not for the easily offended.In the book Ryland gets digitized as a video game character for his afterlife. He ends up getting dumped in a high-level area and immediately being chased by a level ?? wolf, which had me laughing a lot, because, I mean, who hasn't been there? He gets rescued by a racist NPC elf and taken to the main elf city, where he discovers that ALL the elves are super racist! Holy superiority complex, Batman.He also meets another player, digitized like him, who is the BIGGEST. TROLL. EVER, for all that she's an elf. Eldertits made me laugh and cringe, sometimes, with her jokes -- as a true troll does. But the author didn't make her one-dimensional -- there's more to her than just being the biggest, most face-palm-causing troll in the game. There's more to her than being an uber-tough barbarian that runs into each fight Leeroy Jenkins-style. (One battle against Kobolds had me laughing until I coughed...no spoilers, though.) Her depths are hinted at throughout the book, and I'm excited to see how the author explores her character more in future books.The author also uses the racism of the elves to poke at the racism that is evident in fantasy game settings, and to poke at racism in the real world, too. He also has characters grow and change their views on things as the book goes on.If you've ever played an MMO and laughed at the antics of trolls, a lot of this book will be familiar and entertaining to you. It was a fun romp through a digital fantasy world, and I'm excited to see where we get taken in the rest of the series -- as well as to uncover some of the secrets that have been hinted at in the first book.
