My students asked for some extra kinematics questions for practice. I gave them 6 at random from the book. I asked them what they got. They showed me their answers. Solutions in the book for questions 8, 13, and 17 were different from what they got. I confirmed that the book was wrong. I even ran them by a colleague in the math department. Not happy. Yes... I should have vetted the Qs and the As but I just got the book in the mail and had assumed that the problems had been vetted. If someone can show us that we made a mistake, I will happily change my review.I
The questions aren't AP level, but it is a good survey of the topics and gives good drill in the concepts. It gives good fundamental review so that you won't shoot yourself in the foot. I would call it "Five Steps to Nothing Beliw a 3". I think that's a solid review strategy.
I bought the kindle version. The pictures are so small that I can not read any of them. Many of the answers are just wrong. The answer key is filled with a huge amount of mistakes. The editors did not do their job.
I am really surprised by my own assessment of this book. But after reviewing these questions for a while, I don't think most people will need this book when preparing for the Physics AP exam.The questions that are included are the standard kind that are contained within practice exams and test prep guides. But unlike those other books, there are not review sections included here to provide a context for these questions. In addition, the answer key is not in depth enough to really help people understand WHY they should be arriving at the correct answer in all cases.There are also examples where, in the beginning of a certain section, they will tell you to assume a certain constant or variable is equal to X. But they never explain WHY they choose those values for the sample questions.CONCLUSIONI am giving the book an extra star because the questions themselves are challenging and appropriate for the most part. But there are tons of questions that can be downloaded online if you just need to challenge yourself with questions. If you are just looking to cram for the exam without seeking a deeper understanding, there are better ways to do it in my humble opinion.
If you are looking for practice problems and don’t want to pay more for test taking advice that you don’t need, then this is an excellent choice. This book offers only a one page introduction and then has a large section of practice questions, grouped by topic. After the problems comes the answer section. Many answers are just that, the answer, with the final equation. Quite a few offer a very brief explanation. There is an average of perhaps 7 answers per page of this 6†x 9†book, which gives an indication of how brief the explanations, if offered, are. Again, if you are looking for practice rather than to be instructed, then this book offers what you want without needing to pay for extra pages that you don’t need.
My son took AP Physics C in high school this year. He found that the book was very helpful in preparing for the final AP exam. He says that the questions were similar enough to the actual exam that he felt more prepared. It was well organized and had clear explanations. My 13 year old daughter also took a crack at a couple of questions and miraculously got them right by applying some basic knowledge that she had.But overall, it was great practice for my son, who's credits depended on having a great grade.
My company has a ton of community support groups including one to encourage interest in STEM fields. I help moderate that group. I have a calculus and physics background so I enjoy seeing others ( especially girls) interested. I brought this book to our latest meeting and it was a huge hit. There are problems (with solutions) to prep for the AP physics exam but really, anyone who is interested in physics will find this book stimulating. Met our needs perfectly for group challenges.
My nephew used this book to study for a placement test at the college where he is going to be a freshman this fall. He found it to be easy to read and designed in a way that was very user-friendly. The exam he took was a university-level placement test which allowed him to skip ahead to advanced physics courses, but the basic principles are similar to what one would achieve with the AP Physics test.
