Review
My grandson is 5 and was sent to first grade vs. kindergarten this year. He loved, loved Math War (Addition & Subtraction), and we played and played. He needs to be challenged. We both need to watch the + and - signs but he knows all the answers! We even got Grandpa to play. That's how good the game was. (Grandpa is an accountant.) We had more fun with this inexpensive pack of cards than some $100 toys! --School Zone WebsiteI doubted that my kids would actually enjoy this game, but I thought I would try it anyways since the price was so good. My kids love it and actually ask to play it! I've noticed their addition and subtraction fact recall has already gotten quicker! --AmazonI live overseas, and got these to challenge my then-Kindergarten age son. He took them to school for show-and-tell, and the teacher emailed me to rave about them, so I ordered a bunch for the class as a birthday party treat. All the parents love them, and people still ask the teacher when they can buy them, since the kids are obsessed with them game. Great small gift to stock for K through 2nd grade! --Amazon

My kids (ages 5 & 8) were excited about this at first, and I was excited for it to help my 8 year old practice his math facts. But I was disappointed that the totals on the cards didn't add up to more than 10. I was hoping he could work on addition problems like 9+8 or 14-6, but these small numbers make it too easy. Even my 5 year old finds it too easy.
We love this game, it helps my 2nd grader with his math facts, he's good at math just not fast and his teacher kept saying he needed to work on his timed math facts, nothing we did helped, then came math war, it helped him learn while he was having fun, his teacher was so impressed she got her own game of math war. Fun and easy to play and helps kids learn what more can you ask for ðŸ˜
My daughter is in 1st grade and struggles with subtraction, while breezing through addition. I went to a family math night at her school and one of the stations had this game. We play almost every night and she enjoys this game. I like that she has an equal chance of pulling a addition card, since she does so well with it. It builds her confidence for when she gets to a subtraction card that she can't figure out in her head and has to count on her hands. I am hoping this will increase her math fluency to where she is working the problems in her head like she does with addition.
We just tore this open a couple of weeks ago after it'd been sitting since Christmas. Honestly, I think the name Math War was really turning my kids off to play against each other so I asked my daughter to play against me and that changed everything. Math War is now very popular with them. It's essentially math drills that don't feel like math drills. If there is a multiplication and division version I will definitely be getting that one too. The two kids that have really been playing with it are 6 and 8 years old. It's really really fun and the cards are great-- they are easy to hold and shuffle and sit nice in your hand.
This is a great tool for reinforcing math facts! We have the addition/subtraction and multiplication sets. My sons really enjoy playing and it helps them think on the fly. For the price, I think this is one of the best ways to learn basic math facts. The multiplication ones even challenged me. It's been awhile since I've done my times tables. They arrived on time and in good condition.
If he wins, he gets to have a pick of something/decide something himself; he seems to be on hyper-drive independent streak (6 years old) so it works for us. He's motivated to win. I pretended to cheat once to encourage him to do the math on my cards too.I have fun with it too because it is largely a game of chance. I don't let him win, he really wins often which is good, he can probably tell the difference... Note: the cards looked like they'd been used before but oh well we wanted to play so kept them.
I bought a bunch of these cards for my son because he was having a little trouble in school. Having ADHD, it is hard for him to focus on something "boring" for long. These cards have been a lifesaver for both of us. He can focus for way longer than if we were doing it just on paper and we even make it a game at times. These are the ones I bought and have used with great success:-Time and Money-Phonics Made Easy-Sight Words-Alphabet-Math War
This is a great way to practice math facts and the concept of greater than/less than. It is not self checking, so don't expect two children just learning their math facts to play it without assistance. I play with each of my younger children 1-1 or have my older child play with the younger ones still learning their facts. Quite a few times we have a tie, which allows the children to see there are different ways to get the same answer. We also have a homemade memory game where they match numbers to "make a ten." Between these two games, we have avoided flash cards.
