"Istanbul" is a wonderful introduction to a fabulous city. An easy read, it follows the trajectory of the city's fabled history in a smooth chronological rhythm with each period captured in quickie chapters of fifteen pages. It works as an introductory history with 300 pages of chronology, and it works as a travel guide with 60 cross-referenced pages on monuments and museums. A great primer for anyone planning a trip to the city and interested in its history, presented in a readable format somewhere between quick overview and master's degree. The city maps in the early pages are excellently designed, and frequent illustrations are used to good effect. Nevertheless, while the brevity of the chronology makes it an easy read, it also precludes the development of any real historical themes. There is no deep thought here, no new views or insightful analysis, and after several dozen emperors and sultans emerge and die in repetitive procession, they begin to blur a bit one into the next. While the birth and paroxysms of the Ottoman Empire are well-presented from Istanbul's perspective, this reader could have used a few maps of southeast Europe and the Levant to better understand the empire's development. At the same time, events in Istanbul are not presented in the context of contemporary European events. While this certainly helps to keep the chapters quick and readable, it also ignores the huge impact of European events on Istanbul: the Great Schism and massive changes in Rome, conflicts with Austro-Hungary, the crusades, etc. are simply not presented even to frame events in Istanbul. The history and research are excellent (with one tiny quibble: the battle of Kosovo Polje occurred on June 28, not June 15) but broad rather than deep. Freely is clearly at home in the city and with the source material.A great travel guide and quickie history, readable and accessible.
When, in the popular film "Notting Hill", the bookseller character (Hugh Grant) prominently recommended this book to the famous actress/bookstore customer character (Julia Roberts), I thought the volume had to be a studio prop. But, on checking Amazon.com, I discovered that it wasn't. It is instead a very real, readable and excellent history of the city of Istanbul, formerly Constantinople, from the time of its founding in the distant past to the modern day present. A nice feature is the section at the back that describes in more detail the various historical monuments alluded to in the main body of the text. Istanbul is one of the last remaining entries on my personal list of the world's great cities that I intend to visit in my lifetime. After reading this wonderful book, I'm ready to buy the plane ticket and go. Now, all I have to do is convince my wife.
Prof. Freely has walked the streets of Istanbul a lot more than many of the locals and has a good grasp of the cultural and historical significance of this great city.I was lucky enough to be his student, and then assistant, at Bogazici University along the Bosphorous, old Robert Academy, where he taught Physics for many years. He has an excellent eye for catching that little strange detail that many Istanbullians take for granted but what may be a direct link to either the Ottoman Imperial past or all the way back to Romans.They did not call themselves Byzant by the way, and Ottomans did not call them Byzantians either. Both knew they were Romans, Eastern Roman to be exact. Numerous European rulers over the centuries have tried to assume the "Roman Emperor" title and dreamt of re-creating the glory of the Roman Empire, so they have usually found it hard to acknowledge the true heritage of Constantinople.This is a little more than just a street guide, but not exactly a historical treatise either. Thank you Prof. Freely.
I started in the section dealing with the medieval Byzantine emperors, and I have to say I was not impressed. I tried to get through that section to move onto another, but the book continued to read like the prose version of a timeline. Not really much depth to the story, and not trying to make any bigger picture explanations of the time. At some point I skipped ahead to the Turkish sacking of Constantinople, but was still unimpressed enough to write the book off. Maybe other readers found parts of the book which deviated from recounting the chronology of the city in dry language, but I was not that successful.
In october of this year i'll be visiting Istanbul so i decided to read this book to increase my knowledge of this city and i wasnt dissapointed. I love the authors account of Istanbul since it's beginning.I ilke the way he relates how all the major buildings and monuments in Istanbul came to be and its relation with the person who build them and its relation to the city.I liked the last section which summarises the major monuments and a little bit of it's history.I recommend this book to anyone traveling to Turkey
I purchased this book to read during a trip to Istanbul and it was the perfect guide accompanyment. If you are interested in history and want to delve deep into Istanbul's history while visiting here, then I strongly recommend this book. I couldn't put it down, and the book covers everything - from its days as Byzantium to Constantinople to Istanbul and all the brutal, crazy leaders who have resided here. I like how key landmarks and areas of the city are mentioned regularly in here. It makes actually seeing the sites that much more rewarding.You will not be disappointed if you get this book. It is absolutely fantastic.
We are going to visit Istanbul for the first time and thought it would be helpful to learn something about the city and it's incredible history.The author, John Freely he has taught physics and the history of science at Bogazici University (formerly Robert College and Bosphorus University) in Istanbul since 1960 and writes so well.
Wonderfully readable history of one of the great cities of the world.
