As the Operations Manager of a small but growing internet business with all remote employees, Data Governance is part of my responsibility. Until I read "Get Governed," I didn't have a comprehensive roadmap toward conceptualizing and organizing all the data components that continue to become important as we grow, change providers, and collect data. Templar's book is well-organized and thorough, with an accessible voice that covers all the bases without getting bogged down in jargon. I especially appreciated the "Small Business Corner" portion of each chapter, which applied directly to our business and is going to make me sound like a genius when I approach my boss with the suggestions Templar makes--not to mention, we'll save countless hours and many thousands of dollars by following her advice (down to the details of how to name files for easier accessibility--I think most businesses have wasted many hours because employees don't have a system in place!). Her real-world examples drive everything home, and establish her as an expert in her field. I recommend her book for anyone who works in management of any kind, but especially for operations, program, project, and data managers. Superb read.
I like to find ways to connect people to data in a meaningful way. User groups that enter and maintain large datasets have a very different perspective from others that may use later. In an enterprise that has tolerated data with out governance, I have found user groups are required to constantly act as translators between what was meant and what was understood later. It is such a powerful experience to participate instead where such data has been defined, documented, and then available with context provided by such reference material. As a trainer such materials can be invaluable when trying to help new user understand the why behind specific process actions, that on the surface appear useless. The Data dictionary is my new best friend!
Even though Get Governed focuses on large scale businesses, the Small Business Corner at the end of each chapter makes the book relevant to a larger audience. As a small business owner currently operating on a shoestring budget, I was convinced by the second chapter that I will need to follow the principles Templar outlines in Get Governed as I grow my business. Following Templar’s program will help me establish good practices that will help my business avoid some of the many pitfalls that can occur during growth. The author’s easy-going style makes a book about the dry topic of data governance digestible and applicable to large and small business managers. Get Governed is a great resource to rely on annually.
With over 25 years of operations experience in global brands, I understand the critical importance of the partnership between operations and IT in the proper structure of data management and reporting. Ms. Templar’s book is a wonderful guide on how to do it the right way. Following the discipline approach that she offers can almost guarantee success. Her book is a great read for those looking for guidance on how to best approach the management of company data. She explains how starting to think and act on this when your company is small will be critical to support the healthy growth of your company and the most efficient use and management of data. Well done Morgan Templar! I especially like the 'CHANGE' method that she created. It is rare to find a book that is relevant and practical for any size business. The book covers both large corporations and small businesses in a format that is easy to read and understand whether the reader is novice or experienced business person. Her concepts stress the importance of using industry standards as a baseline to her innovative concepts for data governance.
