Read up on the fundamentals of good garden design (it's not as hard as you might think), learn a simple method for creating your own design, and browse a selection of 78 reliable plants that you can find in almost any good garden center in a temperate climate. Sure, you might find newer varieties out there, but these are classics. There are a few shrubs, lots of perennials, and a handful of plants that won't be hardy in most gardens but are worth the effort to bring indoors each winter or worth the money to buy new each spring. Once you've studied the basics of combining plants and browsed through the possibilities, use the stickers and the fold-out design board to create the garden(s) of your dreams. We've included different cultivars for a number of plants and multiples of many of the stickers, because sometimes you need more than one. The design board has a grid on one side and an empty garden plot on the other, to suit your working style. The stickers are proportional to each other, based on the final growth habit, but do keep in mind that plants grow! You'll need to take that into account when you actually start digging.

This is a terrific book. It is informative, and "hands on". After 30 minutes with the book I am already generating new ideas for planting (we have a big job to do along a long fence). The use of the reusable stickers to conceptualize different plant combinations is extremely useful. I am also seeing some plants for the first time. What is amazing is that the stickers contain not only an image of the plant, but also a guide regarding the amount of sun/shade needed.I noticed in another review that someone mentioned the stickers having a strong smell. I was somewhat concerned about this because I am very sensitive to chemical odors. Fortunately, this is not an issue! If I put the stickers right up to my nose, I can smell a plastic odor, but I am not at all overwhelmed by off-gassing from the stickers and I have been sitting next to them spread out on a table for over an hour.As a side note, but relevant for those of you with little gardeners, my 8 year old was immediately attracted to the book and the stickers and has designed a garden already.Thank you for this wonderful book!
Had high hopes....but...not exactly as I had wished. The stickers are very high quality. The pull out design "board" is double sided : garden dirt at eye level and blank grid lines. But the selection of plants is very limited. The accompanying paperback book describes (in a limited way) each of the selected plants. I guess this would be good for a garden novice. The best part was the tutorial on layering a garden with color combinations, plant heights, and textures.
This would have been fun and helpful if I lived somewhere other than California. Many plants not available here and we need drought tolerant plants. I was disappointed.
This is an ok kit for starting to design an area, but a little disappointed in plant selection. Also the grid isn’t scaled, so you have no idea how many plants fit. Good info on the plants and is fun to play with different layouts. Bought a second for a gift and it arrived badly damaged. Hopefully the replacement arrives in time, but I have to now deal with sending damaged item back.

4.5 StarsThis is a useful book for the gardener who knows their plants and wants to gain a better sense of garden design. I am not sure that it's best suited for a total novice, since the illustrations don't quite capture the nature of some of the plants. On the other hand, photographing plants to illustrate the author's structure and design points might have been extremely difficult. This book offers the ability to visualize designs with reusable clings and a planning board. For many garden designers, this will be useful, especially since the author is giving us a sense of the scale of the mature plants. One of the hardest aspects of planning for new garden designers is getting that sense of scale. When you buy young plants, you may incorrectly estimate final height, spoiling a design as the plants grow in. This book can potentially save the gardener that frustration. The author emphasizes the importance of defining structure with all-season plants and filling in with seasonal blooming plants for added color. All in all, a useful book!
Returned this book - not at all what I expected. I don't think it is helpful for someone who is just starting out, and trying to figure out what to plant in their garden.
