We absolutely love Hank the Cowdog in our house! But this one is extra special. Why? Because we live in ge Texas Panhandle, Higgins to be exact and while we were lucky that the monster fire didn’t make it into town, we had the devastating effects that are still talked about today. My kids loved that they are able to picture Hank having to evacuate like they did. That the fear we all felt was and is still okay. Thank you John Erickson for helping put it all into perspective for them and we another great Hank book!
This is my new favorite Hank the cow dog book. This one is based on a wildfire in the Texas panhandle. People were left with nothing. The Erickson Ranch burned along with cattle, homes and grassland. Several lives were lost in the fire. Erickson catchsr the sense of horror at the fire and the wondrous giving spirit of people all over Texas and nearby states as supplies were brought in for the ranchers who had suffered from the fire. The book made me cry, sad and happy tears, for the sense of rebuilding and people helping strangers.
My son and I love reading Hank books aloud together at bedtime. We knew this one was going to be particularly poignant, as we are all too familiar with the actual events that prompted Mr. Erickson's writing this story.Indeed, we had to pause several times so I could regain my character voices because of the tears we were both shedding, both sad and happy.Thank you, John R. Erickson, for writing beautiful literature that is appropriate for kids AND adults and for depicting real ranch life through the eyes of Hank.
John writes about what he knows, and unfortunately he knows what a big fire is like. Mixed in with his great humor is a tale which is all too real to John and his family. A mixture of sadness, joy and caring, all told through the eyes of lovable Hank. I have read and listened to many of Hank's tales of adventure, and this is my new favorite!
I read this to my fifth graders last spring, as soon as it was released. We had followed the disaster from the fires in the panhandle and were aware of the devastation. I wondered how John would find any humor in the Monster Fire. But his gift was ever present. We felt the pain as well as the pride in our state as we learned more about the kindness poured out on those that lost so much. Thanks, we look forward to Hank’s next case! Another great Hank the Cowdog book! Plus, finally some movement in a part of the storyline I've been waiting to see move on down the trail. I'd say what I but don't want to mention spoilers!
Took me back to the middle school days of afternoon reading freshly checked out Hank the Cowdog books from library (always puts you in the middle of that ranch)& only thing missing was my mom's right out the oven chocolate chip 🪠s / tall glass of milk!!!
The book came in perfect condition and I enjoyed the story.
