Human Body touches on each of the body systems and provides a highly detailed look at a human cell. This would not be the book to pick up to learn more about reproduction. While the reproductive organs are clearly identified and an illustration of a baby growing in the womb is included, there is no discussion of how the sperm and egg meet. The simplistic illustrations and lack of punch make this title less successful than the others. Hurricanes has eye-catching photographs, clear information, and heart-stopping first-person narratives. Tornadoes provides an exceptional description of the conditions required to form a tornado and includes a foldout of a spectacular photo gallery. At first glance this does not look like a book for a 5 year old, but it is a great book for my son that has grown with him for the past 2 years. Some parts of this book were too complex for him at first. Others parts were exactly what he wanted to understand that was not in the tornado books for his age group. For example he loved the Twister Gallery with photos and names of tornadoes based on their shape. He enjoyed the two-liter twister activity making a vortex of spinning water, and the chart of enhanced Fujita scale of tornado intensity. Because this book has many fold-out pages that open sideways or up it was a book I handled when reading it to my son when he was younger. He is 7 years old now and cannot read all of this book on his own but likes to have one of the small sections read to him. The book is set up in many smaller parts on different topics.This is not the right book for every 5 year old. If you have a future storm chaser who has been through all the weather books and still wants more, it will grow with them for a few years.
This book is pretty cool. My son loves weather and tornadoes. We read it once a week if not more.

My child LOVED this informative book and used it for a report at school. I was afraid it would be too easy of a read, but it was perfect. Great information, pictures, maps and true stories. The easy tornado experiment was a hit!

As a librarian, I'm always on the lookout for good quality children's nonfiction that isn't dumbed down or overly text dense. This books strikes just the right balance between good quality information [well-written; not too much, nor too little], photos, activities, charts, and even helpful hints for sheltering during a tornado. Basically, it can keep a young reader's attention all the way through. It has some cool fold out pages which work nicely. I especially liked the fold out chart of tornado intensity: pretty cool. I also liked the tornado activity project that you can make with two 2-liter bottles. I would recommend this for readers in 3rd grade through middle school.
