Born and raised in the northwest, Lars W. Johnson's passion for absorbing geologic beauty developed early when the family took a trip south to Portland, Oregon, just in time to catch Mount St. Helens erupt in 1980. Decades, and countless rockhounding trips, later, Lars opened a retail rock shop and organized many fieldtrips, inspiring enthusiasm and inclusivity to those new to rockhounding and a renewed curiosity for locating, collecting, and sharing experiences that seasoned rockhounds could appreciate. A blog quickly spawned to share his accumulated rockhounding information (LarsRocks.com) and exploring, writing, mapping, and cataloguing became his focus. Lars changed the format somewhat and it's not as helpful as his other books. The index is missing, and it makes it very hard to use. There is no way to cross reference sites and stones to plan a trip for specific rocks. You have to go through each entry to find out what each site holds, and most don't show pictures of the rocks he found.He focused on the Olympic penninsula, the area around Kalama, and the north east corner of the state. I'm sad that he didn't focus more attention to the Gifford Pinchot area. Every place that sounds like a fun adventure is at least a couple hours drive.
I enjoyed the way Lars shares his experiences, recommendations and information. It's clear he wants to share what he knows so the rockhound community can continue to enjoy this wonderful recreational hobby. He shares the different aspects of what we as hounders encounter, accessibilty due to terrain or land ownership. What tools to bring and what you need to do to be a good steward of the land you are visiting. For me, who just likes to go exploring, and not too serious a digger, this is a nice reference to have if I decide to take a day or weekend trip.
yay! so glad for the newest edition, with updated descriptions. We like to pack up the family in the camper, grab the dogs and get away from the 7 million people in Seattle. This book should come with a pack of sticky notes so you can mark pages.
I live in Washington and have been wanting to explore more areas for rock-hounding. When I heard this book was being published I immediately ordered one. Glad I did.

Shows a lot of sights that other books fail to show. Well written and excellent photo's. A keeper.
This is our bible. It stays in our family vehicle at all times. You should buy it for the adventures, even if you are not a rockhound.
