About the Author
Wayne Bernhardson first traveled to Patagonia in 1979, visiting both Chile and Argentina as far as Tierra del Fuego, "the uttermost part of the earth," and has returned to the region almost every year since 1990. He also spent a year walking, sailing, and flying around the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) and had the pleasure of revisiting them to research this book. He owns an apartment in Buenos Aires, near the Palermo botanical gardens, and spends four to five months in the "Southern Cone" countries every year.Wayne earned his PhD in geography at the University of California, Berkeley, but abandoned academia for a perpetual Latin American road trip that many university faculty envy. He is the author of Moon Handbooks to Argentina, Chile, and Buenos Aires, and has written for magazines and newspapers including Trips, the San Francisco Chronicle, the American Geographical Society's Focus, Business Traveler, Dupont Registry Tampa Bay, Postcards, National Geographic Traveler, Latin Trade, and Travel Holiday. He often gives slide lectures on destinations he covers in his books.When not in South America, Wayne resides in Oakland, California, with his wife, María Laura Massolo; their daughter, Clio Bernhardson-Massolo; and their Alaskan malamute, Malbec (named for Argentina's signature red wine).

Traveled a large part of Patagonia while using this book, and it was helpful at times, but definitely excluded large chunks of what most people go to Patagonia for; hiking, backpacking and the National Parks, not sitting in 5-star hotels and eating $50 a plate meals. While things do change, many of the businesses, restaurants and hostels listed were in the wrong places on the maps shown or had the wrong addresses listed, and most of the best hostels regarded by other travelers were completely left out. Not a great book for travelers on a budget, and I was the only one down there with a Moon book. I would look elsewhere for an Argentina or Chile Lonely Planet book, as most other travelers I met had these and were much more informative.
Very useful but, unfortunately excludes Torres del Peine.
We used this book on a February, 2017 trip to Patagonia and found it to be useful, but badly in need of an update. On several occasions the information in the book was just plain wrong.
Great guide book! It even included information for Buenos Aires and Santiago which was perfect since we fly in/out of those cities! Recommend!
Love the Moon guides. Just in the planning phase, but gives great ideas on everything from itineraries to places to stay. Very helpful.
great guide and reading
It is difficult to read a travel book on my Kindle. In the future I will stick with a regular book. Also, this book had very little on Chilean Patagonia--much more on Argentinean Patagonia. It also had a lot on the Malvinas/Falkland Islands, an area of much less interest than Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.
Chock full of info. I've used it to plan my whole trip.
